Lakhs of aspirants apply in DU to get admission in their dream college. Talking about Undergraduate admissions, the University Colleges offer several courses in the domains of Science, Commerce, and Humanities; for which marks of +2 examination are acknowledged. According to the rules formulated by the University, all the affiliated colleges are supposed to release cutoffs, that is, a minimum required marks in the respective subject and course related to it.

Now, the difficulty level begins here. The cutoffs have never been a piece of the pie. The top colleges of DU form the cutoff lists which touch the mark of 99%. There are a different set of cutoffs for an unreserved and reserved category of candidates.

Delhi University’s first cutoff for the year 2018 was released on June 18-19. 2018 for most of the colleges. The best colleges of the University, like St. Stephens, SRCC, Hindu among others have increased their cutoffs for some selected courses on an average.

Contemplated observations reveal that the highest cutoff for the B.A. Programme was 98% (for students with Commerce stream) in St. Stephens college which was 97% for the same in 2017. Moreover, there is an average increase of 0.25% for the reserved category candidates according to Stephens’ last year’s cutoff. Following the lead is Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) which has apprehended the reserved category candidates with an average increase of (0.25-0.5) % in both its courses.

Hindu college is another pioneer in the Delhi University. Several candidates try to get admissions in this institute. Although, 98% was the highest this year for Economics Honors course in the general category and 96% in the OBC category. A visible increase of 1% is seen in courses of Hindi along with 0.25% increase in Sociology. As compared to last year, History, Political Science, Sanskrit, Physics, Philosophy, Chemistry, Botany, along with B.A. Programme have seen a rise. Similarly, Miranda House has lived up to its standards this year again, with an increase of percentile for most of its courses.

These were the analysis for a few selected colleges, but the rest also compete equally. Colleges like Shivaji, College of Vocational Studies<span style=”font-weight: 400;”>, Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, or Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies have formulated high cutoffs this year. However, it is also notable that there definitely is a decrease in many of the courses.

While Kirorimal College has seen an increase of 1% for courses like B.A. Programme and Economics Honors for both, reserved and unreserved categories; the cutoffs for many courses is stable like last year.

But despite copious percentile requirement, 2018 established an admission record in DU. The substantiated records show that out of 56,000 seats, a total of 11,000 were filled after the first cutoff release itself. It is shocking for the authorities at the University also, because this number has increased manifold if correlated to the year 2017, which recorded admissions of only 2,000 students after the first cutoff display. The maximum admissions were matriculated by Hindu College, Gargi College, Miranda House, Shaheed Bhagat Singh College along with Lady Shri Ram College.

On the other hand, St. Stephens college is quite well-known for not releasing second cutoff list. It is because there are only a limited number of seats which get full after the first cutoff itself. Similarly, several colleges have closed their admissions for selected courses during/ after the second cutoff admissions. The competition is remarkably extreme at Delhi University.
