An essay is a written composition for you to express specific ideas and come up with supporting facts, analysis, statements, and explanations. The raw format comprises five paragraphs in an essay; however, the number of sections can be adjusted according to the essay’s demand.
Basics of an essay
- Select a topic: the foremost step is to choose a good and suitable topic unless the teacher assigns you a case. You will want to make sure your topic supports the type of paper you’re expected to write when selecting a subject for your essay. A general topic will suffice if you are expected to produce a form that is a general overview. Your topic should be reasonably specific in case you are expected to write a detailed analysis.
The type of paper decides the purpose of your essay. There are three types of essays, generally. They are as following:
- Analytical: this type of paper breaks down the issue or idea into its key components. Then, it evaluates the idea or issue by showing the analysis of the breakdown and the details to the audience.
- Expository: this essay is also known as an explanatory essay because it explains anything.
- Argumentative: this type of essay is also known as a persuasive essay because it makes a specific claim regarding the topic and gives evidence with solid arguments for supporting those pieces of evidence.
After defining the purpose of your essay, it is time for brainstorming.
- Outline or diagram: organizing your ideas and thoughts is the best way to eliminate anxiety. This way, the writer can jot down the essential points without any hesitation. Outline or present them via a diagram for better paperwork.
- Make a thesis statement: it is time to develop your thesis statement once you have an idea for your essay’s basic structure and what information you’re going to present in your article. A thesis statement outlines or states the intended idea to prove the essay. Henceforth, a good writer must be concise, clear, take a position, or specific. It has two key components, i.e., it tells the readers what the essay’s motive is and what points it covers.
- Introduction: little things take more time than the opening. It introduces the concepts and ideas that the essay will portray. The starting of the introduction must be exciting and captivating.
- Body: the body explains, argues, and describes the chosen topic. Include all the main ideas and adjust the number of paragraphs accordingly.
Conclusion: the final set of the paragraph is a conclusion that concludes the entire essay. It can be a full-fledged paragraph or two to three lines.
